Friday, June 5 - Constitution Day

Today is Danish Constitution Day and most people will have the second half of the day off to celebrate.
We are taking a drive to the North, along the coast and stop at the Tved Church to pick up our team members and their hosts from the Hanstholm Rotary Club. Then we have a walk in the Thy National Park which is of course a very coastal national park with sand dunes and the typical vegetation.
Some time ago the area was heavily planted with oregon pines which are not native to the area. They are to be eliminated slowly and replaced with native species. It is rather cold and windy when we climb up this dune to have a look over the area trying to spot some deer. But the views are breathtaking even though we nearly get blown off the top of the dune.
From there we drive along the coast all the way to Hanstholm where the local Rotarians meet us at the Bunker Museum with a sumptuous luncheon of smørrebrød (There, I have finally taught this laptop to write Danish). There is a guided tour through the bunker after lunch. Although the bunker was indeed intended to defend the Danish coast, it was not built by the Danes, but by the Germans after they had invaded Denmark. There were many more such German bunkers all along the Scandinavian coasts.
Blooming wars! Who needs them?
After this visit the drive back south is a very scenic one through beautiful landscapes all the way to 'The Black Houses in Agger, on the Northsea coast nor far out of Hurup.
The Rotary Club of Sydthy has organised another feast and special entertainment for us in this hall. To celebrate the Constitution Day, they've put on some Thy Folklore for us. There is an orchestra, a group of dancers in traditional costumes and a group of singers. A real evening of 'hygge'! Most enjoyable, and as usual a great pity that it has to come to an end.
